Leh, May 19: A total of 40 people were screened for hypertension during a screening and awareness programme organised at Kharu Market on the occasion of World Hypertension Day, with health officials emphasising early detection and lifestyle changes to combat non-communicable diseases.
The programme was organised by AAM-PHC Sakti under the theme, “Controlling Hypertension Together: Check Your Blood Pressure, Defeat the Silent Killer”, as part of efforts to spread awareness regarding hypertension and related health risks among the public.
The initiative was led by the In-Charge Medical Officer of AAM-PHC Sakti along with the healthcare team, who conducted awareness sessions and screening activities in the market area.
During the programme, shopkeepers, vendors and restaurant owners were informed about hypertension, its causes, predisposing factors, associated complications and treatment facilities available through the healthcare system. The health team stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regular monitoring of blood pressure, balanced nutrition, physical activity and adherence to prescribed medication for effective management of the disease.
Pamphlets carrying information on prevention and management of hypertension were distributed among commercial establishments for wider public outreach and awareness.
In addition to blood pressure screening, Random Blood Sugar (RBS) tests were also conducted to identify individuals vulnerable to diabetes and related complications.
Health officials said the programme was aimed at encouraging regular health check-ups and timely diagnosis to reduce the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and promote preventive healthcare practices within the community.
