Leh, Apr 1: The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Eliezer Joldan Memorial College organised a screening of student-produced documentary films based on Yangthang village, alongside formalising a Memorandum of Understanding with the Charkha Development Communication Network to expand field-based media training initiatives.

The programme, held on the college campus, brought together faculty members, students, and residents of Yangthang village who had hosted participants during a rural filmmaking workshop and featured in the films. The MoU, signed in the presence of faculty and representatives of the partner organisation, seeks to facilitate future training programmes, workshops, and practical learning opportunities for media students in Ladakh.

The event began with the arrival of Principal Prof. Stanzin Yangdol, while Tashi Morup, Director of the Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation, attended as Guest of Honour.

In her opening address, Head of Department Assistant Professor Hajira Bano outlined the department’s emphasis on strengthening field-based journalism and documentary practices. She also acknowledged the role of the Charkha Network in facilitating experiential learning for students.

The screening featured a series of short documentaries produced by students across all three semesters. These films were developed during an intensive rural workshop in Yangthang village, where participants received training in visual storytelling, scriptwriting, and camera operations. The sessions were led by Manas Rastogi, part of a team headed by CEO Chetna Verma, along with members Uzma and Ananya.

The documentaries focused on everyday life, cultural practices, and community narratives of Yangthang, offering audiences an insight into rural Ladakh through the lens of student filmmakers.

An interactive session followed, where students reflected on their field experiences, including logistical challenges and the process of engaging with local residents. Participants highlighted the value of direct community interaction in shaping their understanding of grassroots storytelling.

The visiting Charkha team was later felicitated by the college administration in recognition of their mentorship during the workshop.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Assistant Professor Qazi Sheeraz Arif, who acknowledged the contributions of the guest of honour, the partner organisation, village residents, and the college faculty in organising the event.
