Akhoon meet Mandaviya; pitches for sports, infra
New Delhi/Kargil, Aug 22: In a significant push for sports in Kargil, LAHDC Chairman and CEC Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon met Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, in New Delhi on Friday.
Dr. Akhoon pitched the creation of a Winter Sports Academy, emphasizing Kargil’s ideal geography and climate for winter sports.
The Union Minister responded positively and assured that the academy will be set up in Kargil to harness local talent and provide professional training opportunities to youth.
Additionally, Dr. Akhoon sought special funds for sports infrastructure to boost various disciplines, receiving a positive assurance from the Minister.
The CEC also requested a special fund for sports infrastructure development in Kargil to facilitate the growth of multiple sports disciplines, to which the Minister assured positive consideration.
The CEC further stressed the need to support and felicitate athletes from Kargil who represent the region at the national and international levels, through both financial assistance and institutional backing.
He also emphasised the importance of establishing a Sports Council in the district to streamline and promote sports activities at the grassroots level.
The Minister responded positively to both suggestions.
The Minister emphasized the importance of creating employment opportunities in Ladakh through sports-related recruitment, suggesting that the UT Government of Ladakh explore avenues such as physical education teachers, healthcare professionals, athletic trainers, and other allied roles.
He further assured that, in consultation with the UT Government of Ladakh, concrete steps will be taken to generate employment opportunities for the youth of the region.
The meeting marked an important step towards building a sustainable sports ecosystem in Kargil, with both parties expressing commitment to collaborate in promoting youth development, talent nurturing, and sports-driven employment generation in the region.
