Zomato Platform Fee Jumps to Rs 14.90 Amid Delivery Wars

New Delhi, March 20: In a bold move amid cut-throat competition in India’s booming food delivery sector, market leader Zomato has jacked up its platform fee by a steep ₹2.40 to ₹14.90 per order (pre-GST), marking the first hike since September 2025 and mirroring the financial pressures from rider wages, fuel costs, and expansion drives. The pan-India adjustment, now visible across all operational markets on the app, brings Zomato’s charge tantalizingly close to rival Swiggy’s longstanding ₹14.99 (GST-inclusive) levy, raising eyebrows among urban diners already grappling with inflation and combo surcharges during high-demand evening rushes.

Zomato executives, speaking off-record, attribute the escalation to surging logistics expenses and investments in hyperlocal dark stores, AI-driven routing, and festive discounts that have eroded margins despite record order volumes topping 1 crore daily. Customers in metro hubs like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru—where average order values hover around ₹450—now face an extra bite equivalent to a small soft drink, potentially denting impulse orders and nudging loyalty towards fee-free alternatives like direct restaurant apps.

Enter magicpin, the scrappy third player with a modest ₹14.20 per order fee, which has categorically dismissed any near-term increases, branding itself as the “wallet warrior” for Gen Z and Tier-2 city users chasing value over velocity. Backed by aggressive merchant tie-ups and cashback blitzes, magicpin aims to claw market share from the duopoly, especially as Swiggy—yet to blink on pricing—watches warily from the sidelines amid whispers of its own quick-commerce pivot via under-construction Bolt vertical.

Analysts predict mixed fallout: while Zomato’s scale (over 40% market grip) insulates it short-term, persistent hikes risk churn to in-house delivery or budget rivals, exacerbated by regulatory scrutiny on gig economy labour and antitrust probes. Last year alone, platform fees contributed over ₹1,500 crore to Zomato’s topline, underscoring their stickiness despite backlash. As dinner tables across India recalibrate budgets tonight, the trillion-rupee sector braces for a fee fray that could redefine who foots the delivery bill.
