Kargil, May 23 : The Department of Zoology, Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh, in collaboration with WWF India and Prakriti Research Fellowship, on Friday observed the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 with a series of academic and awareness activities focusing on biodiversity conservation and ecological challenges in Ladakh.

Organised under the global theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact”, the programme brought together students, faculty members and conservation experts to deliberate on the importance of protecting the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

The event began with quiz and debate competitions at the Science Block, drawing participation from students across various departments. Nine teams participated in the quiz competition, while eleven teams contested the debate event on themes related to biodiversity and environmental conservation.

In the afternoon session, Kazim from the Western Himalayans Conservation Programme of WWF India delivered a special lecture on the biodiversity of Ladakh and the threats confronting the region’s ecosystems. The lecture focused on environmental degradation, conservation challenges and the need for greater local participation in safeguarding biodiversity.

Deputy Controller of Examinations and Dean of Arts, Dr. Jaffar Khan, welcomed the guests and felicitated them with traditional khataks. Addressing the gathering, he underlined the importance of observing international environmental days and appreciated the collaborative efforts of the Department of Zoology and WWF India.

The session was moderated by Dr. Ahsan Ali.

During the prize distribution ceremony, winners of the competitions were felicitated with mementos. Mohd Hussain secured first position in the speech competition, while Sakina, Arifa and Fatima won the quiz competition.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Basharat Ali.
