Kolkata, May 23: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kolkata on Saturday, the first stop of his maiden four-day visit to India, and was welcomed at the city airport by US Ambassador Sergio Gor.
Rubio visited Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa, and met with the congregation’s officials. He also toured Nirmala Shishu Bhavan, a children’s home run by the Missionaries of Charity, accompanied by Ambassador Gor and other officials.
His visit marks the first time a US secretary of state has come to Kolkata since Hillary Clinton’s trip in May 2012. Rubio’s India itinerary, from May 23 to 26, also includes Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi and is expected to feature discussions on energy, trade, technology, defence and Quad-related matters. The stop in Kolkata follows a recent political transition in West Bengal, where a BJP-led government has taken office.
