Zanskar, Feb 12: The ICDS Department Zanskar, in collaboration with the Education Department Zanskar, organised the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at Government High School Karsha on February 11, with a focus on encouraging girls to take up education and careers in science and technology.

The programme aimed to build awareness among students about opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and to promote equal participation of girls in academic and professional fields linked to science.

Dr. Tsetan, Gynecologist at CHC Padum, attended the function as Chief Guest, while the Block Development Officer, Karsha, was present as Guest of Honour. The Principal of Higher Secondary School Padum joined the programme as Special Guest.

Among those present were Zonal Education Officer Zanskar, Tsewang Dorjay, Child Development Project Officer Tashi Gurmath, Chairman of the School Management and Development Committee of Government High School Karsha, Tashi Tundup, Anganwadi workers and helpers of Karsha Youlsum, along with teachers, students and invited guests.

The programme began with a welcome address by Tenzin Dhakpa, teacher at Government High School Karsha, who spoke on the relevance of observing the day and underlined the role of education in strengthening opportunities for girls.

In her keynote address, Dr. Tsetan drew attention to women’s health and adolescent awareness. She stressed the need for proper health education, balanced nutrition and timely medical guidance for adolescent girls.

Addressing the gathering, Zonal Education Officer Tsewang Dorjay highlighted various government schemes being implemented in schools across Zanskar, with emphasis on academic progress, student health and overall well-being.

The Block Development Officer, Karsha, briefed participants about the Aspirational Block Programme and outlined the development initiatives being taken up in educational institutions and villages of Karsha Block.

An interactive session formed an important part of the programme, during which students raised questions and shared their views with the speakers, adding to active participation and discussion.

Students of Government High School Karsha also presented cultural performances reflecting local traditions and talent, adding colour to the event.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Tashi Tundup, Chairman, SMDC, Government High School Karsha, who acknowledged the support of all departments, guests, teachers and students in making the programme successful.

The organisers said the event sought to inspire girls to pursue studies and future careers in science-related fields while reinforcing the message of education-driven empowerment.
