Islamabad, Dec 12: The United States has greenlit a major $686 million defense package for Pakistan, approving the sale of advanced technology upgrades and comprehensive support services for its F-16 fighter jet fleet to enhance counterterrorism capabilities and operational readiness.
The approval, conveyed by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) to Congress on Monday, encompasses Link-16 tactical data systems, cryptographic equipment, avionics modernization, specialized training programs, and full logistical support to refurbish Pakistan’s Block-52 and Mid-Life Upgrade F-16 aircraft.
This infusion aims to extend the jets’ service life through 2040 while addressing critical flight safety issues and ensuring seamless integration with US and allied forces during joint combat operations, exercises, and training missions.
DSCA emphasized that the deal aligns with US foreign policy and national security goals by bolstering Pakistan’s interoperability in ongoing counterterrorism efforts and future contingencies, affirming Islamabad’s capacity to absorb the technology without disrupting the regional military equilibrium.
The package breaks down to $37 million in major defense equipment and $649 million in ancillary items, underscoring Washington’s commitment to maintaining Pakistan’s fleet as a viable asset against current and emerging threats.
