Patna: Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Tuesday paid tributes to the seven Bihar martyrs of the 1942 Quit India Movement, an official statement said.

He garlanded their statues, located at Shaheed Smarak here, at an event marking the 84th anniversary of the August 11 firing on protesters during a march. The day is observed as ‘Sapt Shaheed Diwas’ (Seven Martyrs’ Day) in Bihar.

The event was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Legislative Council chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh, Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav, several Bihar ministers, legislators, and police and administrative officials.

On August 11, 1942, amid the nationwide Quit India Movement, a group of young students marched towards the Patna secretariat to unfurl the Indian flag when they were fired upon on the orders of the British district magistrate, leading to the deaths of seven teenage freedom fighters.

Those killed that day were Umakant Prasad Singh, Ramanand Singh, Satish Prasad Jha, Jagatpati Kumar, Devipada Chaudhary, Rajendra Singh and Ram Govind Singh.

Choudhary also offered a floral wreath before the ‘Amar Jyoti’ at Shaheed Park located on the Assembly premises, the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Muzaffarpur district administration paid tributes to freedom fighter Khudiram Bose, who was executed at the age of 18 by the British Indian government on August 11, 1908.

The event took place around 4.30 am and was attended by Bose’s family members who came from West Bengal, and senior police and administrative officials of the district.

Bose, born in the undivided Midnapore district of Bengal, became associated with revolutionary activities in the aftermath of the Partition of Bengal in 1905.
