Leh, Jun 06: The University of Ladakh’s Leh Campus wrapped up its World Environment Week celebrations today with a campus-wide cleanliness drive and a renewed commitment to a plastic-free future. The event, held under the theme “End Plastic Pollution Globally,” marked the culmination of a week-long series of environmental activities from June 1 to June 6.
The cleanliness drive, spearheaded by the Mountain Research Institute at the Taru Campus, brought together faculty, research scholars, and students, including the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Saket Kushwaha. The campaign aimed to raise awareness of the detrimental impacts of plastic pollution and reinforce the university’s stance against the use of plastic on campus.
During the drive, Prof. Kushwaha called for immediate steps to make the Leh Campus a “Plastic Free Campus,” emphasizing the university’s leadership role in environmental responsibility. The event concluded with all participants pledging to minimize their plastic usage and champion environmental consciousness in their communities.
The World Environment Week celebrations began on June 1 with a “Cycling for the Planet” event at Taru Campus. Other major highlights included a plantation drive on June 3 in collaboration with the Indian Army’s 1 Corps, an expert lecture on June 4 by retired IFS officer Jigmet Takpa on the ecology of Ladakh, and a plant pit-making activity led by NSS students and non-teaching staff on June 5.
