Leh, Mar 31: Marking the International Day of Zero Waste, the University of Ladakh on Monday hosted a workshop on sustainable waste management, with experts urging a shift towards responsible consumption and structured waste systems in ecologically fragile regions.

Titled “Rethink Waste: Workshop on Zero Waste Living,” the programme was organised at the Leh campus in collaboration with Zero Waste Ladakh, the National Service Scheme, and Supreme Petrochem Ltd.. The initiative focused on raising awareness about waste reduction and promoting sustainable practices across communities.

Addressing participants, Vice Chancellor Saket Kushwaha underlined the environmental vulnerability of Ladakh and called for immediate adoption of sustainable lifestyles. “Sustainability is not just a concept but a responsibility. In regions like Ladakh, where ecological balance is delicate, adopting zero waste practices is essential for our survival and future generations,” he said, encouraging academic and research communities to innovate solutions for waste management and climate-related challenges.

The workshop featured sessions by Aparajita Goswami and Mipham Jigmet, who shared field experiences and practical models tailored to Ladakh’s unique geography. Goswami stressed that waste management begins at the household level, noting that segregation and mindful consumption can collectively reduce environmental burden. Jigmet highlighted the need for systematic and scientific approaches, backed by policy frameworks and community participation.

Earlier, the speakers were welcomed by university officials, including Deans and faculty members, in the presence of students, research scholars and volunteers. The programme opened with the National Song and included introductory remarks by Amjad Hussain, who outlined the role of the NGO and the relevance of the observance. A welcome address was delivered by Stanzin Mentok.

The sessions covered themes such as the lifecycle of waste, its environmental and health implications, and integrated solid waste management systems. Particular emphasis was placed on four-way segregation at source, recycling mechanisms, and strategies to minimise waste generation at both individual and community levels.

Participants engaged actively in discussions on sustainable infrastructure and policy support required for long-term environmental goals. The organisers described the workshop as a platform for knowledge exchange aimed at fostering behavioural change.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Zeerish Firdous, followed by the National Anthem. Organisers expressed hope that the initiative would encourage wider adoption of eco-friendly practices and strengthen efforts towards responsible waste management in the region.
