LEH DEC 12: Sarmang Society and Sarmang Adventure Tours today officially announced the Ladakh Umlingla Challenge 2026, the world’s highest altitude ultra marathon, scheduled to take place on 10 July 2026. The event aims to strengthen border tourism, promote Ladakh’s breathtaking landscapes, and offer runners a once-in-a-lifetime high-altitude experience at nearly 19,000 feet (5900m).
The race is hosted at Umling La Pass, one of India’s strategic and engineering marvels under BRO’s Project Himank. The pass continues to attract global attention for its extreme altitude and proximity to India’s forward areas, making it a symbol of national pride and high-altitude resilience.
The Ladakh Umlingla Challenge is a platform that highlights the region’s importance in India’s border tourism narrative. The race route showcases remote Ladakhi villages, the charm of the Changthang plateau, and the rugged terrain that defines India’s frontier landscape.
Mr. Anil Mohan, Race Director and Secretary, Sarmang Society, said: “Umling La is a gift to India and the world. Through this event, our goal is to bring Ladakh’s border villages, its culture, its harsh yet stunning beauty, and its unmatched altitude challenges to the global running community. Every participant becomes an ambassador of Ladakh’s frontier tourism.”
The event promotes responsible and sustainable tourism, encouraging athletes and adventure enthusiasts to explore Ladakh beyond its commercial hubs.
With race categories of 70K, 50K, 42K, 21K, and 10K, the Ladakh Umlingla Challenge gives participants an opportunity to run in oxygen levels nearly 50% lower than sea level. The thin air, towering mountains, and silent valleys provide an immersive experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world.
Participants will pass through some of Ladakh’s most spectacular landscapes — open high-altitude deserts, snow-covered peaks in the distance, remote hamlets, and wildlife habitats unique to the region.
The event will also generate opportunities for local homestays, guides, transport operators, artisans, and cultural groups, strengthening the local economy while respecting Ladakh’s fragile environment.
Over the years, Ladakh has become a premier destination for adventure tourism. The Ladakh Umlingla Challenge takes this reputation further, making it a global hotspot for ultra runners, mountaineers, and explorers who seek to push mental and physical limits.
The 2026 edition is expected to attract runners from across India and abroad, positioning Umling La alongside world-famous high-altitude challenges.
