KYIV, Dec 16: Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) announced on Monday that its underwater drones successfully struck and critically damaged a Russian submarine in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, marking the first such naval attack in the ongoing war.
The SBU stated on Telegram that “Sub Sea Baby” underwater drones targeted the vessel, which was armed with four Kalibr cruise missile launchers used to hit Ukrainian territory. The submarine suffered “critical damage and was effectively put out of action”.
The operation comes amid intensified Ukrainian naval strikes on Russian-linked vessels in the Black Sea, while Russian forces continue targeting Odesa port. Recent incidents included strikes on two Turkish cargo carriers, prompting Turkey to urge a halt to attacks on ports and energy facilities to avoid escalation.
Russia has not yet responded to the claims. Ukraine has been using drones and missiles against Russian ships since the February 2022 invasion.
