NEW DELHI, Dec 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, beginning a two-day State visit to Ethiopia at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. This marks his first trip to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
The visit follows PM Modi’s productive trip to Jordan, where he held talks strengthening bilateral ties and was bid farewell by Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II. In Ethiopia, Modi will engage in detailed discussions with PM Abiy covering all aspects of bilateral relations, address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, and meet the Indian diaspora.
Addis Ababa, headquarters of the African Union—a permanent G20 member since India’s 2023 Presidency—offers a key platform for Modi to highlight India’s role as the ‘Mother of Democracy’ and the India-Ethiopia partnership’s value for the Global South.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated the visit reaffirms shared Global South commitments to deepen friendship and cooperation. PM Modi will conclude his tour in Oman (Dec 17-18) at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, building on the strategic partnership rooted in historic ties.
