LONDON, JUN 27: The UK Government has announced plans to introduce new legal sponsorship routes for eligible refugees while tightening immigration laws to make it easier to deport people staying in the country illegally.
Under the proposed scheme, community groups, universities and employers will be allowed to sponsor refugees to settle in the UK. The initiative is modelled on Canada’s long-running community sponsorship programme.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the government aims to expand safe and legal pathways for genuine refugees while closing loopholes that have been exploited under existing immigration and human rights laws.
The proposed legislation will also narrow the definition of family to immediate relatives and seek to curb what the government describes as misuse of human rights provisions to block deportations.
The announcement comes amid political uncertainty following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to step down, with former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham widely expected to succeed him as Labour leader.
Immigration remains a major political issue in the UK, particularly over small boat crossings across the English Channel and the growing cost of housing asylum seekers.
