Bareilly (UP), Dec 28: Two men from Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district were detained by Uttar Pradesh Police following complaints from villagers about suspicious activities in Bareilly district, officials confirmed on Sunday. The matter came to light on Saturday morning when residents of Dhimri village in the Ahladpur area reported on the police’s social media platform about two individuals allegedly begging at houses in the locality. Izzatnagar police initiated a search operation after finding their language and behavior suspicious. The men attempted to evade detention by blending into a crowd and offering namaz, but were apprehended after villagers spotted them again, said Station House Officer Bijendra Singh. During interrogation, the detained individuals identified themselves as Shaukat Ali and Sajjad, both residents of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir. They claimed to have arrived in the city on December 10 and had been staying in Dhimri village since then, taking shelter in a local mosque. The duo told investigators they were impoverished and survived through begging. However, police described their activities as suspicious based on preliminary investigation. The Local Intelligence Unit has joined the probe, and intelligence agencies are conducting detailed interrogation. The photographs and Aadhaar details of both men have been sent to Jammu and Kashmir Police for verification. Further investigation is currently underway, officials added.
