Leh, Dec 28: Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta has emphasized that tourism serves as a cornerstone of Ladakh’s economic development, generating livelihoods for local communities while bolstering allied sectors including hospitality, transport, handicrafts, and eco-tourism. He stressed the importance of promoting sustainable and responsible tourism practices to safeguard Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem and ensure long-term inclusive benefits for the region. The LG made these remarks during his visit to Sangam Point, one of Ladakh’s premier tourist attractions located approximately 35 kilometers from Leh on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. The site features the spectacular confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers, internationally recognized for the striking visual contrast where the blue waters of the Indus merge with the muddy green-brown waters of the Zanskar. Describing Sangam Point as a natural marvel and flagship destination, Kavinder Gupta noted that such locations significantly enhance Ladakh’s appeal among domestic and international visitors. The breathtaking landscape, encircled by rugged mountains and river valleys, provides unforgettable experiences for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and adventure seekers. The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that Sangam Point has become a major adventure tourism hub, offering activities such as river rafting, trekking, and sightseeing. It also serves as an important stopover for travelers on the Srinagar-Leh corridor, with its accessibility from Leh strengthening its role in the Union Territory’s tourism circuit. He emphasized the need to establish dedicated viewpoints and cafeterias at Sangam to enhance visitor comfort and experience. The LG also underscored the importance of maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability to preserve Ladakh’s pristine beauty for future generations. Kavinder Gupta stated that since Ladakh attained Union Territory status, focused development has accelerated across key sectors, with tourism emerging as a priority area. The UT Administration is emphasizing holistic development of prominent and potential tourist destinations, ensuring improved infrastructure, better connectivity, and enhanced facilities. The Lieutenant Governor noted that the Zoji La Tunnel, expected to be completed within two years, will be transformative by providing year-round all-weather connectivity between Ladakh and the rest of India. This infrastructure will boost tourism by ensuring uninterrupted access, reducing travel time, and making Ladakh accessible during winter months. Highlighting winter tourism potential, Kavinder Gupta said concentrated efforts are underway to promote winter sports, cultural events, and experiential tourism, enabling year-round visitor flow to strengthen the local economy and generate sustained employment. The LG stated that the UT Administration is committed to developing world-class tourism infrastructure while maintaining ecological balance. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts to position Ladakh as a sustainable, safe, year-round destination showcasing its unique landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and adventure opportunities. The Lieutenant Governor interacted with officials and stakeholders, urging focus on responsible tourism initiatives that empower local communities, encourage eco-friendly practices, and preserve Ladakh’s environment for future generations.
