Twin Powerful Earthquakes Rock Venezuela, Buildings Collapse in Caracas

CARACAS, JUNE 25 : Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela within minutes of each other on Wednesday evening, causing building collapses in the capital Caracas and triggering widespread panic among residents.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake measured 7.1 in magnitude and struck west of Morón along Venezuela’s Caribbean coast at a depth of 22 kilometres. Barely a minute later, a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake hit the same region at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The twin tremors, among the strongest recorded in Venezuela in more than a century, were felt across several states and caused significant structural damage in Caracas.

Residents rushed out of swaying buildings as walls collapsed and dust clouds rose over parts of the city. Many people remained outdoors long after sunset, fearing aftershocks.

“It started off gently and then gradually grew stronger until we all had to leave our homes and gather outside,” said Caracas resident Hector Ricci.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said authorities were responding to “alarming situations” in the Altamira area of Caracas, where several homes and buildings reportedly collapsed. Emergency services were deployed, and motorists were urged to clear roads for ambulances and rescue teams.

“We are activating aid and rescue efforts according to established protocols. People should remain cautious and check on children and elderly family members,” Cabello said on state television.

Another resident, Roberto Gamas, described the quake as extremely powerful. “The building shook violently from side to side. Everything in the apartment fell. Thankfully, we managed to get out safely,” he said.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami alert for the Virgin Islands, while authorities in the Dominican Republic also issued a warning. A brief alert for Puerto Rico was later lifted.

Although Venezuela lies near several fault lines, major earthquakes are relatively uncommon compared to countries along the Pacific Ring of Fire, such as Mexico and Chile, where seismic activity is frequent.

Authorities are continuing to assess the extent of damage and casualties as aftershocks remain a concern.
