Washington, Jan 24: US President Donald Trump on Friday criticized Canada for rejecting his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence project over Greenland, cautioning that Beijing could “eat them up” as Ottawa deepens trade relations with China.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Canada is against The Golden Dome being built over Greenland, even though The Golden Dome would protect Canada. Instead, they voted in favor of doing business with China, which will ‘eat them up’ within the first year!”
Trump’s remarks came amid escalating tensions between Washington and Ottawa after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s address at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Carney called for a “fading rules-based order” and unveiled a new USD 7 billion trade deal with China, including tariff reductions on Chinese electric vehicles and increased market access for Canadian agricultural products.
Addressing Carney by his first name during his Davos speech, Trump said, “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
He added that Canada “gets a lot of freebies” from the US and that “they should be grateful” for American security protections.
The Canadian government defended its trade decisions, citing the need to diversify partnerships and strengthen economic resilience amid a “divided and uncertain world.”
Trump’s comments highlight ongoing friction between Washington and Ottawa over security and trade priorities, with China increasingly emerging as a strategic alternative for Canada.
