WASHINGTON, JUNE 15 : US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States and Iran have finalized a peace agreement aimed at ending the 107-day conflict between the two nations, with the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz expected to reopen following the formal signing of the deal in Switzerland on June 19.
Making the announcement on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the agreement would pave the way for the restoration of maritime traffic through the narrow waterway, which carries nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies, easing concerns in global energy markets.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all,” Trump wrote, declaring that the agreement would lead to the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
“I hereby fully authorize the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and, simultaneously, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” Trump stated.
In a subsequent message, however, the US President clarified that the Strait would officially reopen on Friday following the signing ceremony in Switzerland.
The breakthrough comes after months of intense military confrontation and diplomatic negotiations. Trump described the agreement as a historic achievement that would bring stability to the Middle East and secure vital energy routes for the global economy.
“This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region. Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me,” he said.
According to the framework of the agreement, Washington and Tehran will enter a 60-day negotiation period focused on Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme and the future of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
Diplomatic sources said the accord was brokered with the assistance of mediators including Pakistan and Qatar, which had earlier facilitated a ceasefire agreement on April 8. That truce remained in place while negotiations continued toward a comprehensive settlement.
The announcement comes amid lingering regional tensions. Hours before the deal was finalized, Israeli airstrikes reportedly targeted Hezbollah-linked positions in Beirut, prompting renewed concerns over stability in the region. Trump acknowledged holding discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian negotiators, urging restraint and warning against actions that could jeopardize the peace process.
The conflict, which began earlier this year, resulted in significant casualties and major political upheaval within Iran. Several senior Iranian leaders were reported killed during the hostilities, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, senior security officials, and top military commanders.
Despite the challenges, the peace agreement is being viewed as a significant diplomatic development with potential implications for regional security, international trade, and global energy supplies. Markets are expected to closely monitor the formal signing ceremony and the subsequent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.
