JAMMU, JUN 25: In a major boost to rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, the Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has approved raising the maximum permissible speed of trains on the 17-kilometre Banihal–Qazigund single-line electrified section from 75 kmph to 100 kmph.
Railway officials said the enhanced speed limit is expected to reduce travel time, improve operational efficiency, and offer greater convenience to passengers travelling on the vital rail corridor connecting south and central Kashmir. The move is also expected to contribute to the socio-economic development of the Kashmir Valley.
According to officials, the increased speed will enhance the section’s carrying capacity while providing additional time for maintenance work, thereby improving the safety of train operations.
“The reduction in train running time will help clear the track more quickly for other train movements, leading to better overall operational efficiency,” officials said.
The speed enhancement is also expected to improve punctuality of trains operating up to Qazigund, Anantnag, and Srinagar, reducing delays and ensuring a smoother travel experience for passengers.
Reaffirming its commitment to safe, fast, and comfortable rail travel, the Jammu Division urged passengers to follow all safety guidelines during their journey and cooperate in protecting railway property.
