UoL Hosts National Conference on Chinese Studies
Leh, Sept 11: Former Union Minister and Chancellor of Rishihood University, Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, has called for a renewed understanding of ties between India and China, stressing the need to revisit history, avoid past errors and realign trade balances in India’s favour. He was speaking at the inaugural session of the first National Conference on Chinese Studies, hosted by the University of Ladakh.
The two-day event, which began on Thursday, has been jointly organized by the Centre for Chinese Studies and Language, University of Ladakh, the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi, and the Department of History, Zakir Husain Delhi College (Evening), University of Delhi. The theme of the deliberations is “Asia’s Giants in Global Governance: Navigating India-China Relations in the 21st Century.”
The proceedings commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Subrat Sharma, Dean of Academic Affairs. Conference convenor Ms. Tsultim Zangmo set the tone by underlining the contemporary relevance of the theme, while Prof. Shreeparna Roy from Delhi University’s Department of East Asian Studies reflected on the academic significance of the initiative.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Ladakh, Prof. (Dr.) Saket Kushwaha, lauded the effort and promised to strengthen the Chinese Studies centre. He highlighted the importance of holding such a conference in Ladakh, a region that lies at the forefront of India’s northern frontier and has witnessed first-hand the historical and present-day challenges of India-China relations.
The gathering, the first of its kind in Ladakh, is seen as a moment of academic and strategic value, bringing together scholars and policymakers to deliberate on the shifting balance between the two Asian powers.
