New Delhi, Dec 7 : The Supreme Court will hear on Monday a plea by Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of detained climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, challenging his National Security Act (NSA) detention as illegal and a violation of fundamental rights.
Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria will take up the matter, previously deferred on November 24 after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought time to reply to Angmo’s rejoinder. The court had earlier sought responses from the Centre and Ladakh administration on her amended petition filed October 29.
Angmo’s plea argues the detention relies on outdated FIRs, vague claims, and baseless assertions lacking any real link to the grounds, calling it an abuse of preventive powers that undermines constitutional liberties. She contends it’s absurd to target Wangchuk—recognized for decades in education, innovation, and conservation—over Leh violence on September 24, which he publicly condemned as a setback to Ladakh’s peaceful five-year struggle.
Wangchuk was arrested under NSA on September 26 amid protests for statehood and Sixth Schedule protections that killed four and injured 90, with authorities alleging he incited the unrest. The law allows up to 12 months’ detention to avert threats to India’s defence.
