New Delhi, Jan 27: The Supreme Court took serious cognizance of rising acid attack cases, directing all states and Union territories to submit comprehensive data including year-wise case statistics, court pendency, charge sheets filed, and victim rehabilitation measures within four weeks.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant also sought victim details covering academic qualifications, employment, marital status, medical expenses, and rehabilitation schemes. The court specifically asked for information on cases involving forced acid ingestion and appeals pending in high courts.
Hearing PIL by acid attack survivor Shaheen Malik, the bench urged the Centre to consider “extraordinary” punishment for convicts and expand disability definitions under law. Malik seeks enhanced compensation, medical care, and relief for victims suffering internal organ damage from forced acid consumption.
