DRASS: The Drass Summer Carnival 2026 got underway on Wednesday with vibrant cultural performances, traditional sporting events and strong public participation, setting the tone for a five-day celebration being held as part of the 27th anniversary commemorations of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Organised in Drass, widely known as the “Land of Valour,” the carnival has drawn local residents, tourists, sportspersons and cultural groups, reflecting the region’s growing prominence on the tourism map of Ladakh. The event seeks to promote tourism, preserve local traditions and provide a platform for showcasing indigenous sports, culture and talent.
The carnival, scheduled from June 3 to June 7, features a diverse programme comprising Horse Polo, Tent Pegging, Archery competitions for men and women, cultural performances and local food festivals celebrating the distinctive heritage and cuisine of Drass and Ladakh.
The opening ceremony witnessed an enthusiastic turnout, with artists presenting colourful cultural displays and traditional musical performances that highlighted the region’s rich cultural legacy. Visitors from different parts of the country were accorded a warm welcome, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Organisers said the event is designed to strengthen Drass’s position as an emerging destination for heritage, cultural and adventure tourism while creating opportunities for local communities to showcase their traditions and hospitality. The carnival is also expected to provide a boost to the local tourism sector by attracting visitors and sports enthusiasts during the summer season.
Traditional sporting events, particularly Horse Polo, Tent Pegging and Archery, are expected to be among the major attractions of the festival, drawing participants and spectators from across the region.
Organisers have invited the public to take part in the celebrations and experience the unique cultural traditions, sporting heritage and hospitality of Drass throughout the five-day event.
The carnival will continue until June 7 with a series of sporting contests, cultural programmes and community-centred activities aimed at celebrating the spirit and heritage of the region.
