NEW DELHI, JUNE 11: Smoke was detected from the engine room of the vessel MT Jalveer off the coast of Oman after a fire broke out, but all 20 Indian sailors on board are safe, according to official sources on Thursday.
Officials said smoke was seen emanating from the tanker, which experienced a fire incident in its engine room while sailing near Omani waters. The crew managed to remain safe, and the situation is being monitored.
According to vessel tracking data, MT Jalveer is an asphalt/bitumen tanker sailing under the flag of Guinea-Bissau, with a length of 119.95 metres and a width of 16.84 metres.
Earlier, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a fire incident on a tanker about 21 nautical miles northeast of Sohar, Oman, advising vessels in the area to exercise caution while investigations continue.
In a separate development, the Indian Embassy in Oman said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities following another reported maritime incident off Shinas port.
The incidents come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region following recent attacks on commercial vessels, including the MT Settebello, in which three Indian seafarers were killed.
India has expressed concern over the rising attacks on merchant shipping, calling for restraint, dialogue, and protection of international sea lanes.
