Kargil, Mar 24: With fresh snow accumulation continuing to impact high-altitude routes, authorities in Kargil have announced a tightly regulated traffic plan for March 24, restricting movement on critical axes and closing the Shinkula route entirely, while allowing only limited, time-bound passage on the Kargil–Srinagar and Penzila corridors.
The District Police Kargil, in its advisory, stated that vehicular movement on the Kargil–Srinagar road will depend on weather conditions and clearance by the Border Roads Organisation. Light motor vehicles fitted with anti-skid chains will be allowed to move from Minamarg towards Sonamarg up to 1500 hours, subject to a green signal from road maintenance agencies.
Traffic on the Kargil–Zanskar route via Penzila will remain strictly regulated, with one-way movement permitted from Kargil towards Zanskar. Vehicles equipped with anti-skid chains will be allowed to cross from the Panikhar checkpoint between 0900 hours and 1200 hours. No movement will be permitted beyond the designated window.
The Kargil–Leh highway will remain open, offering partial relief in maintaining connectivity within the region.
In contrast, the Padum–Darcha road via Shinkula will remain closed due to heavy snow accumulation, halting all vehicular movement along this stretch.
The Nimoo–Padum road will continue to operate on a limited schedule, remaining open only on Sundays and Wednesdays, with anti-skid chains mandatory for all vehicles.
Authorities have urged commuters to adhere strictly to the advisory and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter travel. Given the volatile weather conditions, travellers have been advised to verify road status before departure.
Multiple helpline numbers have been issued across Kargil, Drass, Zanskar, Sonamarg, and adjoining areas to assist commuters and provide real-time updates.
The advisory reflects ongoing efforts to balance safety and connectivity in the region, where snow accumulation and shifting weather patterns continue to dictate road access.
