Seek Judicial Probe, Relief, Release of Detainees & Media Accountability
Leh, Oct 01: At least seven prominent student organisations representing Ladakhi students across multiple states and Union Territories submitted a joint memorandum to the Union Home Minister on Tuesday, seeking urgent intervention in the wake of the tragic events in Leh on September 24 that claimed four lives and left several injured.
The memorandum, endorsed by the All Kargil (Ladakh) Students’ Association Delhi (AKSAD), Ladakh Students Forum JNU, All Ladakh Student Welfare Associations of Chandigarh and Jammu, Student Educational Movement of Kargil, All Ladakh Student Association Kashmir, and the Ladakh Student Welfare Society Aligarh, called for a fair judicial inquiry under the supervision of a sitting High Court judge to ensure accountability and restore public confidence. The student bodies underscored that a transparent process was vital to uphold justice and strengthen trust in the rule of law.
Highlighting the devastating impact on families, the memorandum pressed for dignified government employment for the bereaved, substantial financial compensation, and comprehensive medical support for those injured. It emphasised that such measures were essential to enable recovery and restore livelihoods disrupted by the tragedy.
Equally urgent was the demand for the lifting of restrictions imposed in Ladakh and the release of detainees, including environmentalist Dr. Sonam Wangchuk and several young activists arrested during peaceful protests. The organisations argued that the continuation of these measures only deepened mistrust and heightened tensions in an already fragile atmosphere.
In a separate but related statement, the student leaders also demanded accountability from sections of the national media, accusing them of spreading misleading narratives that defamed Ladakhis by branding them as “agents” or “toolkit users.” Such claims, they asserted, were not only baseless but also damaging to the sentiments of the community. They sought a transparent investigation into media conduct and a public apology for what they described as defamatory reportage.
Asserting their unwavering commitment to the unity and integrity of the nation, the signatories said their appeals stemmed from a desire to restore faith in democratic governance and ensure justice for Ladakh. They urged the Centre to act decisively, stressing that timely intervention could bring solace to a community grappling with grief and uncertainty.
