Srinagar, Dec 26: A risky attempt to take selfies atop a parked train at the Budgam railway yard left two youths from Srinagar with severe burn injuries on Friday, officials said.
The incident took place when the two boys climbed onto an Accidental Relief Train (ART) parked inside the railway yard. While clicking photographs from the roof of the coach, they came in contact with an overhead high-tension electric wire, resulting in a strong electric shock.
Railway officials said both youths suffered serious burn injuries and were immediately shifted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital in Srinagar for treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that one of the injured remains in critical condition, while the other is stable.
The injured have been identified as Reyan Ahmad Dar (16), son of Shameem Ahmad Dar, a resident of Marajpora, Batamaloo, whose condition is stated to be critical, and Arbaz Ahmad Dar (20), son of Mehrajdin Dar, also from Marajpora, who is reported to be out of danger.
Officials said the overhead electric lines used for railway operations carry extremely high voltage and can cause serious injuries even without direct contact.
Police have taken cognizance of the incident and further details are being gathered.
Railway authorities have once again urged the public, particularly youngsters, to refrain from climbing railway coaches or infrastructure for photography, warning that such actions can lead to severe and lasting injuries.
