Nubra, Jun 11: In a decisive move aimed at strengthening the welfare and management of Bactrian camels in the Nubra Valley, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nubra, Mukul Beniwal (IAS), convened a high-level meeting today with members of the Camel Association Nubra at the SDM Office Complex, Diskit.
The meeting, held on June 11, centered on key issues affecting the region’s iconic double-humped camels—an integral part of Nubra’s ecological and cultural landscape. Discussions covered a range of topics, including the need for regular medical checkups, improved hygiene practices, and maintenance of a clean environment for the camels.
One of the major directives issued by SDM Beniwal was for the Block Veterinary Officer (BVO) Nubra to initiate systematic tagging of all camels in the region and ensure meticulous recordkeeping. This measure is expected to aid in better tracking, healthcare, and management of the animals.
Also on the agenda were concerns about stray camels, especially during the harsh winter months. The SDM emphasized the need for deploying watch guards to prevent neglect and ensure protection during off-season periods. Progress on tourism-related projects, which could impact camel welfare, was also reviewed.
The meeting was attended by key officials including the Block Veterinary Officer Diskit, Livestock Development Officer Diskit, and Naib Tehsildar Diskit, underlining the administration’s collaborative approach to camel conservation.
With rising tourist activity and climate pressures in Ladakh, today’s meeting signals a proactive stance by local authorities to preserve the health and heritage of Nubra’s cherished Bactrian camels—an enduring symbol of the cold desert’s unique ecosystem.
