New Delhi, Sep 2: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) to consult the Attorney General for India and the Solicitor General on all policy decisions.
The direction came while the top court was hearing petitions challenging the prolonged tenure of BCI chairman Manan Kumar Mishra and seeking his removal from the post.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana said both the Attorney General and the Solicitor General should be actively associated with every policy decision taken by the BCI.
The court was hearing a plea filed by advocate Yogamaya MG, which questioned Mishra’s continued tenure as BCI chairman.
According to the plea, Mishra was first elected BCI chairman until 2012. Though he briefly stepped down in 2014, he returned as chairman in November that year and has continued in the position since then.
