New Delhi, Dec 30: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed senior IPS officer Rakesh Aggarwal as the interim Director General (DG) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) following the premature repatriation of incumbent DG Sadanand Vasant Date to Maharashtra.
Aggarwal, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, is currently serving as Special DG in the NIA. He was appointed to the post on September 29, 2025, on an in-situ basis after his existing position of Additional Director General (ADG) was temporarily upgraded for two years or until further orders.
According to the MHA’s office memorandum, Aggarwal will hold additional charge of the NIA DG until a regular appointment is made or until further orders.
The move comes after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the repatriation of Date, a 1990-batch Maharashtra cadre officer, to his parent cadre. He is expected to assume charge as Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra, succeeding Rashmi Shukla, whose two-year tenure ends on December 31, 2025.
Aggarwal’s interim appointment is viewed as a transition measure by the Home Ministry to ensure continuity in the agency’s leadership while the process for appointing a full-time NIA chief is underway.
