New Delhi, Jun 05: In a major milestone for India’s defense and aerospace sectors, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. (TASL) and France-based Dassault Aviation have signed four Production Transfer Agreements to manufacture complete fuselages of the Rafale fighter aircraft in India. This marks the first time Rafale fuselages will be produced outside of France.
The agreement represents a significant boost to India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities, with Dassault Aviation describing it as a critical step toward developing a high-precision industrial ecosystem in the country.
Under this strategic partnership, TASL will establish a state-of-the-art production facility in Hyderabad. The facility will manufacture vital structural components of the Rafale, including the lateral shells of the rear fuselage, the complete rear section, the central fuselage, and the forward fuselage. The first fuselage units are expected to roll off the assembly line in FY2028, with a targeted capacity of producing up to two complete fuselages per month.
“This is a decisive step in strengthening our supply chain in India,” said Eric Trappier, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation. “Thanks to the expansion of our local partners, including TASL—one of the major players in the Indian aerospace industry—this supply chain will contribute to the successful ramp-up of Rafale production and, with our support, will meet our quality and competitiveness requirements.”
Sukaran Singh, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Advanced Systems, added, “This partnership marks a significant step in India’s aerospace journey. The production of the complete Rafale fuselage in India underscores the growing trust in TASL’s capabilities and the strength of our collaboration with Dassault Aviation. It also reflects the remarkable progress India has made in building a modern, world-class aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.”
This landmark collaboration reinforces India’s position as a key player in the global aerospace supply chain and supports the country’s vision of economic self-reliance under the “Make in India” initiative.
What is an aircraft fuselage?
The fuselage, or body of the airplane, is a long hollow tube which holds all the pieces of an airplane together, according to NASA. The fuselage is hollow to reduce weight. As with most other parts of the airplane, the shape of the fuselage is normally determined by the mission of the aircraft.
A supersonic fighter plane has a very slender, streamlined fuselage to reduce the drag associated with high speed flight. An airliner has a wider fuselage to carry the maximum number of passengers. On an airliner, the pilots sit in a cockpit at the front of the fuselage. Passengers and cargo are carried in the rear of the fuselage and the fuel is usually stored in the wings. For a fighter plane, the cockpit is normally on top of the fuselage, weapons are carried on the wings, and the engines and fuel are placed at the rear of the fuselage.
The weight of an aircraft is distributed all along the aircraft. The fuselage, along with the passengers and cargo, contribute a significant portion of the weight of an aircraft.
