FEROZEPUR, Mar 21: The Punjab Police, in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF), foiled a major cross‑border narcotics smuggling attempt on Saturday by recovering 6.5 kg of heroin near a border outpost at Mahtam Nagar village in Fazilka district. Officials said the operation was carried out after intelligence inputs about Pakistan‑based smugglers trying to exploit the border darkness to push drugs into Indian territory.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had crossed the zero line and were operating close to the border fence before being intercepted. He stated that alert BSF troops fired several rounds to prevent the breach, and a subsequent joint search operation by police and BSF led to the seizure of the narcotics consignment from the area.
Sharing operational details, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Gursewak Singh, Counter Intelligence, Ferozepur, said the operation was executed based on reliable intelligence. Police teams and BSF personnel carried out a secret operation in the Mahtam Nagar sector where the Pakistani smugglers attempted to push the drugs. “BSF troops responded promptly and successfully thwarted the attempt,” he said, adding that the operation resulted in a substantial recovery of narcotics from the spot.
A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to trace the alleged local accomplice and unravel the entire smuggling network, the AIG added
