JAMMU, Apr 4: The Anti‑Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Saturday trapped and arrested a head constable of Thanamandi police station in Rajouri district for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹10,000, officials said.
The accused, identified as Head Constable Muhammad Ilyas, was posted at Thanamandi police station. The ACB action followed a complaint lodged by Abdul Hamid, a resident of Reasi, who alleged that the officer was demanding money to release his vehicle that had been impounded in connection with a road accident.
According to the complaint, the accident took place when Abdul Hamid was travelling to Shahdra Sharif. He alleged that he had already paid ₹5,000 earlier and was now being pressured to pay an additional ₹10,000, failing which the case would be “stretched” and his vehicle would not be released. “I was told if I don’t pay, they will stretch the case and my vehicle will not be released,” the complainant told Kashmir News Trust, adding that he had faced harassment during the process.
Acting on the complaint, the ACB laid a trap and caught the head constable red‑handed while he was accepting the bribe amount, officials said. The accused was taken into custody and further investigation into the case is underway.
