Jammu, Mar 8: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah urged the power department to prioritize lineman safety during Saturday’s ‘Lineman Diwas’ event, organized by the Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited (JPDCL). He set a clear goal: zero deaths among these frontline workers while on duty.
Speaking at the celebration, Abdullah emphasized that the J&K government and power department are fully committed to protecting every lineman keeping the lights on across the region.
The day honored linemen as the unsung heroes who maintain electricity supply, especially during emergencies and disasters, ensuring no interruptions for residents.
In his address, Abdullah called the occasion “long overdue and vitally important,” highlighting electricity’s role in everything from healthcare and education to irrigation. “Behind every light that switches on is a lineman risking it all,” he said.
He praised them as the “true foot soldiers” of the power sector, spotlighting their bravery during Operation Sindoor and the 2025 floods. “You face war zones and natural calamities just like our defense forces—putting lives on the line,” Abdullah noted.
To tackle safety, he directed officials to enforce strict measures: procure gear, train staff properly, and stick to protocols without shortcuts. “Safety equipment is only half the battle; it must reach the field and be used right,” he stressed.
Abdullah also handed out certificates and mementoes to 20 outstanding linemen, suggesting cash prizes from next year’s event to boost recognition.
JPDCL Managing Director Gurpal Singh added that the corporation powers over 12 lakh consumers in the Jammu region.
