Srinagar, July 11: In a major boost to medical education in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an additional 50 MBBS seats for Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, increasing its annual intake capacity from 200 to 250 students from the academic session 2026-27.
The approval was granted by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC through a Letter of Permission (LoP) issued under Section 28(3) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.
Officials from the Health and Medical Education Department said the decision followed a detailed assessment by MARB under the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations (UGMSR), 2023. The evaluation confirmed that GMC Srinagar meets the required standards related to infrastructure, faculty strength, and academic facilities.
The latest enhancement comes after the college received approval for 20 additional MBBS seats in the 2025-26 academic session, taking its intake from 180 to 200. With the addition of 50 more seats, GMC Srinagar will now admit 250 MBBS students annually from 2026-27.
The Health and Medical Education Department termed the development a significant step towards expanding medical education opportunities and strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said the increased intake will provide more aspiring doctors from the Union Territory an opportunity to pursue medical education while helping create a larger pool of qualified healthcare professionals.
The department added that the approval further strengthens GMC Srinagar’s position as a leading medical institution and reflects continued efforts to enhance healthcare education and services across J&K.
