New Delhi, Dec 16: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of betraying Mahatma Gandhi’s vision by pushing a new rural employment bill designed to dismantle secure livelihoods for the rural poor.
Gandhi claimed the VB-G RAM G Bill, which seeks to replace MGNREGA, reflects Modi’s long-standing opposition to Gandhian principles and the rights of India’s impoverished. “Modi ji hates two things: Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas and the poor’s rights. MGNREGA embodies Gandhi’s dream of village self-rule and served as a lifeline during COVID,” he posted on X.
Several opposition MPs staged protests in the Parliament complex, branding the legislation an insult to Bapu and a fresh attack on rural India after the government’s failure to address youth unemployment. The Congress vowed to fiercely resist any move to weaken the scheme.
