NEW DELHI, APR 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Parliament to pass amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam during its special three-day session starting April 16, enabling women’s reservation in the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
In a letter to Indian women shared on X, Modi stated: “Our democracy will become stronger and more vibrant if 2029 elections are held with women’s reservation fully in place.” He emphasized that women’s rising excellence demands greater legislative participation, warning that delays would be a “gross injustice.”
“The daughters of India cannot wait endlessly for their rightful share. A stronger women’s voice in legislatures strengthens democracy itself,” he added, urging women to contact their MPs for support.
The 2023 Women’s Reservation Act reserves one-third of seats (33%) in Lok Sabha and state assemblies, but implementation was delayed until after the post-2027 Census delimitation—potentially 2034. Amendments will expand Lok Sabha to 816 seats (273 reserved for women) and activate it for 2029.
Modi seeks blessings for this “historic” push to empower women ahead of the special session.
