Leh, May 17 : A mega cleanliness drive covering major stretches of Sub-Division Kharu, including Shende Morh near Stakna, Kharu market and areas up to Upshi, was conducted on Friday under the directions of Deputy Commissioner Leh Romil Singh Donk as part of an intensified campaign to promote sanitation, environmental awareness and public participation in Ladakh.
The drive was led by Mohd Shabbir and witnessed the participation of officials from multiple government departments, security agencies, business groups and volunteers, reflecting a coordinated civic effort to improve cleanliness across one of the region’s busiest transit corridors.
Officials from the Block Development Office Kharu, Ladakh Police, Army, 11 RCC Border Roads Organisation, the Department of Rural Development Leh, the Confederation of Indian Industry Foundation supported by HDFC Bank under its Parivartan initiative, Merchant Association Kharu and local volunteers participated in the campaign.
Teams carried out sanitation work along roadsides, market areas and public spaces by removing plastic waste, garbage and litter accumulated in open areas. The waste collected during the drive was properly gathered and disposed of through coordinated sanitation measures, officials said.
Addressing participants, Mohd Shabbir said sustained cleanliness campaigns were essential for generating awareness on hygiene, public health and environmental responsibility, particularly in ecologically sensitive regions like Ladakh. He urged residents and shopkeepers to avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste and to actively support civic initiatives aimed at preserving the region’s natural landscape.
Officials described the campaign as part of a broader administrative effort to encourage community-led sanitation practices and inspire similar initiatives across other villages and subdivisions in Leh district.
