Kargil, May 26: Acting on a viral social media post highlighting large-scale garbage dumping at the Rongo slopes in Kurbathang, the District Administration Kargil on Monday launched an extensive cleanup operation and imposed penalties on individuals found responsible for illegal disposal of waste at the site.
The dumping site, located below the Barchay and Tumail Colony area, had triggered widespread concern after photographs and videos circulated online showing heaps of accumulated garbage scattered across the slopes, raising fears of environmental pollution and public health hazards.
Responding swiftly, the district administration, in coordination with the Municipal Committee Kargil, mobilised sanitation workers, machinery and logistical support to clear the affected area. Officials said the entire site was cleaned during the operation in an effort to prevent further ecological degradation and restore the surroundings.
Authorities also initiated punitive action against violators identified during the inquiry. Fines were imposed under municipal sanitation by-laws, with officials warning that strict enforcement measures would continue against those found indulging in illegal dumping activities.
The administration stated that indiscriminate disposal of waste in ecologically sensitive areas poses serious threats to water bodies, public health and the fragile Himalayan environment of the region.
Reiterating existing waste management guidelines, officials urged residents to adhere strictly to waste segregation and disposal protocols already notified through official channels. Under the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2026, waste is required to be segregated at source into wet, dry, sanitary and hazardous categories before being handed over to authorised municipal collection vehicles.
Officials maintained that scientific waste disposal and public participation remain essential for maintaining sanitation standards and preventing environmental hazards in urban and semi-urban areas of Kargil.
The administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining cleanliness across the district and appealed to citizens to cooperate with municipal authorities in ensuring sustainable waste management practices for a cleaner and healthier environment.
