Leh, May 26 : Former Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of the BJP-led Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Leh, Tashi Gyalson, held meeting with Tarun Chugh, National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party and party in-charge for Ladakh, in New Delhi and discussed the evolving framework of self-governance and constitutional safeguards for the Union Territory.
The meeting comes amid ongoing deliberations between the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ladakh-based stakeholders over demands relating to democratic representation, protection of land and employment rights, and constitutional safeguards tailored to the region’s distinct socio-cultural identity.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, Gyalson conveyed gratitude to Chugh and the BJP central leadership for their continued support in exploring a context-specific governance model for Ladakh. He acknowledged the role of the party leadership in advancing discussions around safeguards within the ambit of Article 371, the proposal for a Union Territory-level elected body with legislative, executive and financial powers, and the creation of separate District Councils for each district of Ladakh.
Gyalson also referred to the extensive consultations, policy deliberations and research undertaken with guidance from senior party leaders while shaping a governance structure suited to Ladakh’s geographical and demographic realities.
The former CEC stated that the proposed framework had evolved through broad consensus and sustained engagement with various stakeholders. He maintained that the exercise was aimed at safeguarding Ladakh’s cultural heritage, local aspirations and administrative interests while strengthening democratic participation in the Union Territory.
