Leh, Apr 2: Highlighting cultural affinities between Odisha and Ladakh, Utkal Divas was observed at Lok Niwas here on Wednesday, with speakers underscoring shared spiritual traditions, architectural heritage and community values under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative.
The celebration, marking Odisha’s statehood in 1936, brought together officials of the Union Territory administration and personnel from Odisha serving in Ladakh, with a focus on strengthening inter-regional understanding through cultural exchange.
Addressing the gathering, Under Secretary Sumera Shafi extended greetings to Odisha personnel and drew parallels between the two regions. She referred to Odisha’s temple architecture, particularly the Konark Sun Temple, and Ladakh’s Buddhist monasteries, noting that both reflect deeply rooted spiritual traditions expressed through distinctive architectural forms.
She further highlighted similarities in the tribal cultural fabric of Odisha and Ladakh, observing that both regions have sustained strong community bonds and traditional practices over time. Acknowledging the contribution of Odisha personnel posted in Ladakh, she commended their commitment to duty in the demanding conditions of the high-altitude region.
Personnel from Odisha described Ladakh as their “second home”, sharing their experiences of adapting to the region’s harsh climate and terrain. They also spoke about Odisha’s historical legacy, including the Kalinga War, after which Emperor Ashoka embraced the path of non-violence and Buddhism.
They highlighted the spiritual significance of the Jagannath Temple, one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, and invited people from Ladakh to visit Odisha.
Officials said the event served to reinforce the broader objective of fostering unity and mutual respect by celebrating the diversity of cultural traditions across regions.
The programme was attended by Chief Accounts Officer Tsewang Dorji, Under Secretary Deachen Chondol, and officials and staff of Lok Niwas and the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat.
