LEH, APR 17 : Just three weeks after directing the renovation of a reservoir at Phikar, Stok, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena of Ladakh today inaugurated the first water body under the newly launched Project Him Sarovar. He operationalised the structure by releasing glacial melt into it.
Project Him Sarovar, launched on April 10, aims to create small water bodies across Ladakh to conserve snowmelt and ensure long-term water security. The Stok water body, created by restoring a heavily silted depression, spans 1,824 sq m and holds nearly 35 lakh litres, benefiting around 150 hectares of farmland. The administration, with active local support, cleaned, dredged, de-silted, and stone-pitched the site to prevent seepage.
During the visit, LG Saxena announced the adoption of Stok as a model village for self-reliant, culturally vibrant, and sustainable rural development, along with Likir. He declared himself a member of the village and pledged full support for its inclusive growth, including block-paving roads to enhance aesthetics and create a dust-free environment for tourists.
Under Phase I, 50 water bodies (30 in Leh, 20 in Kargil) will be developed, covering 25% of Ladakh’s villages, with hopes to reach 50% within a year. The initiative will converge government departments, armed forces, and communities to combat climate change and water scarcity. Saxena emphasised organic farming, solar energy, and strengthened tourism infrastructure to make Stok a premier destination where visitors experience authentic Ladakhi hospitality.
