KISHTWAR: One worker died and another was injured in a rain-triggered landslide at a hydro-power project site near Dangduru in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, officials said on Monday. In a separate incident amid heavy snowfall, over 230 people—including women and children—were safely evacuated from the high-altitude Sinthan Top.
The landslide struck late Sunday night, trapping two workers at the project site. Rescue teams recovered one body and airlifted the injured worker to a hospital.
At Sinthan Top, which links Kishtwar in the Jammu region to Anantnag in south Kashmir, 235 civilians in 38 vehicles were stranded due to severe weather on March 15. A joint operation by the Army’s White Knight Corps, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and civil administration braved snow-blocked roads and extreme conditions to reach them.
Troops provided hot meals, drinking water, shelter, and medical aid, including essential medicines. Repair teams restored some vehicles, while passengers from others were evacuated to safety. The operation, supervised by Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma, SSP Naresh Singh, and the commanding officer of 11 Rashtriya Rifles, highlighted seamless coordination with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation.
Due to ongoing inclement weather, authorities closed all educational institutions outside municipal limits in Kishtwar and adjoining Doda district as a precaution.
