GUWAHATI, May 10: Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Sunday invited Himanta Biswa Sarma to form the next government in Assam after NDA leaders formally staked claim to power at Lok Bhavan.
According to an official statement, the Governor will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and members of the new Council of Ministers on May 12.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be attended by Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, BJP president Nitin Nabin and several other senior leaders.
This will mark the NDA’s third consecutive term in Assam since the BJP-led alliance first came to power in 2016 under former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Sarma, who assumed office in 2021, is set to become the first non-Congress chief minister in Assam to serve two consecutive terms.
The NDA secured a decisive two-thirds majority in the 126-member Assembly, winning 102 seats. The BJP won 82 seats, while its allies AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each.
