Leh, Sept 22: The Union Territory Administration of Ladakh has taken a decisive step towards transparency and digital governance by introducing an online e-auction system for the allotment of preferential, vanity or fancy vehicle registration numbers. The new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), issued by the Regional Transport Officer, Dr. Zahida Bano (JKAS), will come into effect with the soft launch of the fancy number booking portal on September 25, 2025.
Under the new arrangement, all fancy registration numbers will be allotted exclusively through the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ official portal www.parivahan.gov.in, eliminating the need for manual applications and curbing chances of favoritism or malpractice. Citizens will be able to register themselves online, select their preferred number, participate in the bidding process during the auction period, and complete payments digitally. The portal will maintain a secure electronic record of every bid and transaction, ensuring the process remains tamper-proof and fully transparent.
Officials have described the initiative as a landmark reform aimed at making services more citizen-friendly. By shifting the entire system online, applicants will no longer need to visit transport offices or rely on middlemen to secure their chosen numbers. Instead, they can bid from the comfort of their homes, track the availability of numbers in real time, and make payments seamlessly through the secure portal. The reform is also expected to boost government revenue, as fancy numbers traditionally attract high demand and competitive bidding.
The launch of the online e-auction system underscores the Ladakh administration’s commitment to digital-first governance. Making the process fully online not only enhances accountability but also saves citizens’ time and effort. The initiative is expected to strengthen public trust, reduce paperwork, and contribute to Ladakh’s vision of becoming a digitally empowered Union Territory.
With the soft launch scheduled for September 25, 2025, the public can begin logging on to fancy.parivahan.gov.in to register, participate in auctions, and secure their preferred numbers. The move marks not only a technological shift in the delivery of public services but also a cultural shift towards openness, fairness, and modern governance in Ladakh.
