Leh, Oct 09: After nearly two weeks of digital silence, mobile internet services were finally restored in Leh district Thursday, bringing relief to residents, students, and businesses who had been facing severe communication and connectivity challenges since September 26. And all restrictions in Ladakh have been lifted in view of the people’s cooperation and responsible behaviour.
This significant development reflects the return of peace and stability, since the Union Territory of Ladakh witnessed complete restoration of normalcy with uninterrupted internet services, smooth functioning of educational institutions, and resumption of public transport and other civic activities.
The suspension, which came in the wake of heightened tensions and security concerns in the region, had paralyzed several sectors — from online education and digital banking to tourism-related operations.
While broadband and leased-line connections remained functional, mobile data services were entirely shut down as part of precautionary measures taken by the administration.
On Thursday after a prolonged break, the University of Ladakh, Leh Campus, and the School of Agricultural, Sciences & Technology (SAS&T), Leh resumed regular classes. In a move aimed at easing restrictions and restoring full normalcy across the district, all colleges resumed their class work from Wednesday and schools across the district were thrown open in phased manner earlier.
According to officials, the decision to restore services was taken after reviewing the prevailing situation and noting significant improvement in law and order conditions.
“Peace has largely returned to the district, and we are confident that normalcy is being restored. Accordingly, mobile internet services have been resumed with immediate effect,” disclosed an official.
Residents, who had been relying on limited broadband connections and offline modes of communication, welcomed the restoration. Local traders and hoteliers echoed similar sentiments, stating that the blackout had adversely affected digital payments and bookings at a time when the tourist season was still ongoing.
It may be recalled that mobile internet services in Leh district were suspended on September 26 following incidents that prompted the administration to impose restrictions under Section 144 CrPC. Although curbs on public gatherings and movement were gradually eased earlier this week, mobile internet restoration marks the final step toward returning to full normalcy in the district.
With services now restored, residents hope that such prolonged disruptions will not recur and that alternative mechanisms will be developed to balance security measures with citizens’ right to connectivity.
