DC Leh reviews progress; calls for coordinated action

Leh, Oct 16: Shortages of skilled labour, delays in material transport, and pending finishing works have emerged as the major constraints slowing the construction of the upcoming New Terminal Building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee (KBR) Airport, Leh, a project envisioned to blend sustainable geothermal technology with Ladakh’s cultural aesthetics. The terminal’s geothermal heating and cooling system, designed to utilize groundwater maintaining a steady temperature of 12°C, aims to offer an eco-friendly solution suited to the region’s extreme climate.

These challenges came to light during a review meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Leh, Romil Singh Donk, IAS, on Wednesday at the DC Office. The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Ghulam Mohd (JKAS), Chief Planning Officer Tsewang Gyalson, representatives from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), officials from line departments, and the executing contractors.

The AAI team presented a comprehensive update on the project’s progress, covering the current status of terminal construction, roofing, geothermal boreholes, and the development of passenger facilities. The new terminal, spanning three levels, will feature aerobridges, escalators, lifts, and two departure gates, aimed at improving accessibility and passenger comfort.

DC Donk emphasized the need for coordinated inter-departmental support and timely logistical assistance to overcome existing hurdles. He urged all departments to work in close collaboration and communicate challenges proactively to maintain project momentum.

The review also focused on the integration of Ladakh’s traditional art and cultural motifs into the terminal’s architecture. The DC directed AAI and cultural officers to ensure the authentic representation of local heritage through stupas, wall art, and decorative elements being incorporated into the design.

Following the meeting, the DC, accompanied by the ADC, CPO, and AAI officials, visited the construction site to inspect on-ground progress. The team reviewed ongoing works, including glass installation, lift systems, the BMN area, and the geothermal infrastructure.

DC Donk instructed the project team to submit a realistic completion schedule supported by weekly progress reports and announced that he would conduct another inspection next week to assess further developments. Once completed, the new terminal is expected to serve as a modern gateway to Ladakh, combining advanced green technology with the region’s distinct cultural identity, reflecting both innovation and tradition in its design and functionality.
