Leh, May 12 : Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Nyoma has launched a sustainable agriculture initiative in the Changthang region aimed at reviving traditional greenhouse farming and strengthening climate-resilient cultivation practices in remote villages.
Under the leadership of Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, a team from KVK Nyoma visited traditional mud-walled greenhouses in Tsaga and Kargyam Valley as part of the green initiative focused on promoting sustainable agriculture and protected cultivation methods.
During the visit, greenhouse UV films were distributed among farmers to support fresh vegetable production and improve protected farming systems in the high-altitude region. Officials said the initiative seeks to enhance self-sufficiency in vegetable cultivation and encourage sustainable agricultural practices suited to the climatic conditions of Changthang.
On the second day of the programme, an awareness camp on “Soil Fertility Management through Natural Farming Techniques” was organised at Sato village, where more than 40 farmers participated.
The camp focused on promoting eco-friendly and low-cost agricultural methods aimed at maintaining soil health and ensuring sustainable farm productivity. Farmers interacted with Dr. Phuntsog Tundup on subjects related to natural farming techniques, organic inputs and marketing of agricultural produce.
Speaking during the programme, Phuntsog Tundup stressed the need to combine traditional agricultural knowledge with scientific approaches to achieve sustainable agricultural development in Ladakh.
Farmers participating in the programme appreciated the efforts of KVK Nyoma in addressing local farming challenges and introducing practical solutions adapted to the harsh climatic conditions of the region.
The programme concluded with an interactive session during which farmers shared their experiences and discussed future possibilities for strengthening sustainable agriculture and protected cultivation practices across Changthang.
